Our Love Story
“Spring Baobabs”
Our story is about treasure.
Treasure, a thing of immense value, it can’t be measured in gold or jewels. Our true treasure, has been the perspective of security and knowing what really matters, to each other. Value placed not in the wealth accumulated or possessions but in each other. The knowledge that things might be broken yet still remain precious. The immense gratitude that we have every day as we grow experiencing the quaintness in a lifetime of foibles.

This, they say is the autumn of our lives. Not because the days are shorter, nor the sun less bright, but because our hearts have grown full, tempered by years of laughter, loss, and quiet endurance… and of course some salt and pepper sprinkles that have been hard to conceal. A decade ago, which has felt like a few weeks, nearly the same season of Eid at the conclusion of the “Holy” and commencement of the “Holi”…if you get the drift, Amer, in a jovial celebratory mood interrupted a “counter” conversation between Lucy (Ndung’u) and Muthoni. With hand holding and toasting, smoldering embers were ignited. Amer said he was leaving for Malindi the following Monday. Well…. let’s just say we went down together two months later and thus the beginning of our travels and a long-treasured life…..
Shortly after meeting, of course the usual getting to know each other led to the question of birthdays lest either of us got accused of pae****ia 😉 and of the one in a trillion coincidences, neither of us could believe the other, I scratched my head wondering when she had gotten into my wallet to pull the “what a coincidence” prank. 4th April with evidence and ID’s demanded. Could there have been any other sign?!!!
Our story has been one: – of love and gratitude for each other – of enjoying life’s journey – of small or long trips taken at any time – of good wine opened on ordinary days. – of generosity toward each other and others—donations made quietly, advice given freely, hands extended without expectation.
One fine day, driving back to Nairobi from Malindi, it must have been our second or third trip. As we approached Voi, in the midst of our usual conversation, Amer said to me; ” That’s it, I’m done, if you’ll have me I’ll be with you always”. And from then we knew that we would be together.
We have learned that treasure hoarded becomes weight, but treasure shared becomes legacy. So here we are, living, loving, laughing and just creating our treasured moments.
Twilight isn’t a time, It’s a place where the lights are softer, weather milder and gratitude eternal.
